From an e-mail to some shul-mates after Tisha B'Av, when I laid tefillin for Mincha (Afternoon Service): "I managed to put on a kippah by sticking a bobby pin all the way on the *left* side of my head, as far away from the surgery scabs [from brain surgery] as I could get, so that I could lay tefillin for the first time since my surgery. (Tefillin must rest directly on the head--one can't have any fabric under them, so I couldn't wear a beret with tefillin.) My head seems to have survived. 🙂 I'm back in my beret now."
